At Fun Box, learning is everywhereāwoven seamlessly into play, discovery, and conversation. This week, we focused on three of the Specific Learning AreasĀ set out in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS):
š§® Mathematics
š Understanding of the World
āļø Literacy
While these may sound like big topics, for our little learners theyāre simply part of the fun! Letās take a look at how these areas came to life through hands-on, joyful experiences.
š§® Maths Magic ā Building Blocks, Gorgeous Gardening and Nifty Numbers
Mathematics often gets a bad reputation among grown-ups, but for young children, itās anything but intimidating! At Fun Box, we believe that maths is everywhereāand we make it engaging, playful, and full of purpose.
This week, we spotted maths magic happening all around:
š§± Construction Play: As the children built with a variety of materials, they explored size, shape, space and dimensionāconcepts like big/small, tall/short, and how 2D and 3D shapes fit together.
šŖ“ Gardening Time: While planting radish seeds, the children practiced measuring and capacityĀ by filling containers with soil. They counted out seedsĀ carefully, then matched them to the right number of pots.
š¦ Water Tray Fun: Floating balls with numerals turned into a game of number recognitionāan early maths skill closely linked to letter and symbol recognition.
š¢ Matching Quantities: Through puzzles and hands-on activities, children began linking numerals to quantitiesāa big step in understanding abstract numbers.

š¦ Ice Lolly Sequencing: Our much-loved āice lollyā game gave children a chance to follow visual patterns and sequences, building early logic and prediction skills.
These activities form the foundation for strong mathematical thinkingāthrough play, not pressure.
š Understanding of the World ā Science Meets Sensory Play
Our little scientists were buzzing with curiosity this week as we dove into Understanding of the Worldāexploring how things work, what things are made of, and how they change.
We carried out a mini science experiment that sparked awe and excitement:
š§ Fizzy Ice Cubes!Ā We mixed coloured water with baking soda, froze it into ice cubes, and then used pipettes to drop vinegar on top. The result? A fizzy, foamy explosion of colours that thrilled the children.
As they observed the bubbling reaction, they chatted about the changes happeningādeveloping vocabulary, asking questions, and making predictions. These moments encourage scientific thinking, observation and understanding of cause and effect, all key parts of this learning area.
āļø Writing Wonder ā From Names to Water Brushes
Literacy development is about more than just reading and writingāit starts with a love of mark-making, storytelling, and expressing ideas.
This week, our children explored writing in age-appropriate and confidence-building ways:
āļø Name Practice: Our school leavers made a great effort to copy their namesĀ using whiteboard markers and chalksāa proud moment and a big step in early literacy.
š§ Brush & Water Mark Making: Younger children used water and brushesĀ to create marks on different surfaces, experimenting with lines, shapes, and control.

These small steps support fine motor development, pre-writing skills, and the idea that marks can carry meaningāall crucial for later reading and writing success.
š In Summary
Whether itās measuring soil, watching a fizzy reaction, or writing a name for the first time, our children are engaging deeply with the world around them. The Specific Learning Areas of Mathematics, Literacy, and Understanding of the WorldĀ are not just boxes to tickāthey are opportunities to explore, discover, and grow.
At Fun Box, we nurture a love of learning through play, curiosity, and joyful experiencesābecause thatās where the real magic happens.
