This week, we continued exploring our healthy choices at nursery theme, supporting children to learn about food, their bodies, and each other through hands-on, playful experiences.

Exploring Veggies in the Baby Room🫛🥕

In our baby room, the focus was on sensory exploration. A variety of vegetables were placed into a large pot, and the babies were invited to touch, lift, take out, explore, and taste them at their own pace. Many of the babies were wonderfully brave and tried tasting the vegetables too — although the celery stick was definitely not a favourite 😄. These experiences supported the EYFS areas of Physical Development and Understanding the World, encouraging curiosity, sensory awareness, and early food exploration.

Fruit Kebabs 🍇🍐🍎🍌

The older children explored healthy foods in a variety of engaging ways. They practised cutting lettuce using scissors, helping to develop hand–eye coordination and fine motor skills. With Lauren, the children made colourful fruit kebabs using a range of delicious fruits. They carefully chopped the fruit using table knives and chopping boards, building independence and confidence while talking about healthy food choices 🍓🍌.

Vegetable Patch

Sensory learning continued through our vegetable patch tray, where the children explored different vegetables and used them to make marks with paint. This activity encouraged creativity, investigation, and descriptive language. Emily’s Mystery Box added an exciting challenge, as the children tried to guess which vegetables were hidden inside using only their sense of touch. This supported problem-solving, communication, and sensory discrimination 🥕🎨.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar 🐛🍎🍊🍰

Alisha introduced a familiar and much-loved story, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The children enjoyed feeding the caterpillar different foods while discussing which foods were healthy and which were treats. This activity supported early literacy, language development, and understanding of healthy choices in a meaningful, story-based context 📖🐛.

Veggie Soup 🍲

Later in the week, with plenty of vegetables left from our activities, the children worked with Lena to make a delicious vegetable soup. They chopped vegetables, tasted different flavours, and talked about the ingredients before enjoying their soup together during afternoon snack. This was a lovely opportunity to bring healthy choices at nursery into everyday routines and shared experiences 🍲.

Making Healthy Choices

The children also showed their deepened understanding during a sorting game, where they sorted foods into healthy and not-so-healthy categories. They confidently talked about their choices and explained their thinking, demonstrating early categorising skills and a growing awareness of healthy eating. This supported the EYFS areas of Mathematics and Communication and Language, alongside Understanding the World.

Body Parts

Alongside food-related learning, the children also explored body parts. They helped draw around each other and added details such as eyes, ears, and arms, naming different body parts as they went. This supported body awareness, vocabulary development, and self-identity.

Throughout the week, the children showed a natural focus on social skills. We observed beautiful collaborative play in both the baby room and preschool, with children sharing resources, helping one another, and working together. These moments strongly supported Personal, Social and Emotional Development, helping children build positive relationships and confidence 💛.

It was a week full of exploration, cooperation, and healthy learning — all through play.
