Remembrance Day 2025

Remembrance Day is always a meaningful moment in our nursery calendar. It gives us the chance to introduce this important tradition to the children in a gentle, age-appropriate way — exploring not only its history, but also building new understanding through hands-on, play-based activities. ❤️This year, our Remembrance Day activities for preschool helped the children learn through creativity, exploration and quiet reflection.

We began by familiarising the children with the poppy, the well-known symbol of remembrance. Through this simple flower we explored different areas of learning. The children created their own wreaths using paper plates and paint, noticing colours, shapes, and where wreaths are used and why.

We also printed poppies using potato stamps — a simple, tactile way to explore the symbol together. 🌺

Out in the garden, the children joined a poppy number hunt, searching for large chalked poppies with numerals written inside them.

Indoors, in a separate activity, the children worked together to compare small groups of paper poppies arranged into sets of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. They talked about which group had “more”, “less”, or “the same”, building early maths skills through curiosity and play.

On 11th November, our older children watched Poppies, a gentle BBC animation portraying the First World War through the eyes of woodland animals. You can watch it here:👉 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pv_ub7Be7oA

We wrapped up the week by making delicious Poppy biscuits where the children could practice their measuring, counting and cooking skills.

Alongside our craft and number-based learning, we focused on giving the children simple, meaningful ways to understand respect, community, and remembrance. Small moments — like talking about why people wear poppies or watching the gentle animation — helped them connect early ideas of empathy, kindness and history in a way that made sense for young minds.

Children in Need 2025 at Fun Box

At the end of the week, we celebrated another important event: Children in Need 2025. 🐻💛

“For more than half a century, BBC Children in Need has been helping children and young people across the UK, raising funds to provide vital support for those struggling with challenges caused by mental health, poverty, social inequality and family-related issues.”👉 https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zkcdb7h#:~:text=For%20more%20than%20half%20a,inequality%20and%20family%2Drelated%20issues

The children were invited to come to nursery in their pyjamas in exchange for a small donation. Then then prepared Pudsey ears using small dotty stickers and yellow card.

And made Pudsey faces using yellow playdough and colourful pompoms.

Looking Back on a Special Week

As we moved through these two meaningful occasions, what stood out most was the children’s curiosity, openness, and kindness. Whether they were quietly listening during the two-minute silence, hunting for chalk poppies in the garden, or proudly wearing their Pudsey ears, they approached each moment with their own blend of wonder and heart.

Weeks like these remind us how powerful early experiences can be — how even simple activities can help children make sense of the world, connect with others, and feel that they are part of something bigger. We are grateful for the support of our families and for the chance to share these moments together. 💛🌺
