The final week of the summer holidays has arrived, and with September just around the corner, we have reached the end of another nursery academic year.
And what better way to finish 2025ā2026 than with a little bit of show jumping!Ā š“
Maps are really exciting šŗļø
It has been a wonderfully busy final week, filled with local adventures, imaginative play, sensory exploration and plenty of opportunities for the children to practise real-life skills too. We carried on exploring our local area, building on the activities and adventures we have enjoyed over the past few weeks. The children spent time looking closely at a large map of the area around us, spotting roads, familiar places and interesting features and talking about where different things might be.
We then brought the map to life in our tuff tray. Using tape to create roads, wooden blocks for buildings and, of course, plenty of little cars, the children created their own miniature local area. They moved the vehicles around the roads, rearranged the buildings and developed their own ideas through play.
Showjumping? At nursery? š
Our local-area theme then took a slightly more imaginative turn when the New Forest Show came to Fun Box!

With inflatable horses at the ready, the children became riders for the day and tackled their very own show-jumping course in the garden. We used our nursery resources to create jumps and obstacles, giving the children lots of opportunities to run, balance, climb, negotiate their way around the course and have plenty of fun along the way.

From show jumping, we moved on to something rather more domestic!
The children had a go at washing socksĀ in bowls of soapy water before squeezing them out and carefully hanging them up to dry. Young children often love being involved in the ordinary jobs they see adults doing every day, and activities like this give them a lovely opportunity to practise independence, coordination and practical life skills through play.
Our younger children enjoyed a very different sensory experience with a beautiful citrus and herb themed sensory tray. Lemons, limes, oranges and fresh herbs offered lots of interesting colours, textures and scents to explore. There was plenty of touching, smelling and investigating ā and, naturally, some of the citrus proved far too tempting not to have a little taste of too!

And amongst all the playing, exploring and show jumping, this week has also marked a little moment of change for us. We said goodbye to the last of our school leavers as they finished their final week at Fun Box and prepared for their next big adventure.

At the same time, some of our newest children have been joining us for their settling-in sessions, getting to know the nursery, the team and their new surroundings before officially beginning their own Fun Box journey.
So, with the socks washed, the horses jumped, the maps explored and the last summer adventures enjoyed, we are saying goodbye to summer and hello to September.
A new academic year is about to begin, bringing new children, new friendships and, no doubt, plenty of new adventures. We cannot wait to see what 2026ā2027 has in store. ā¤ļø
