Did You Know… Father’s Day Has Been Celebrated in the UK Since the 1940s?🎉

Here in the UK, we’ve been honouring dads, grandads, uncles and all kinds of father figures on the third Sunday in June since the mid-20th century. Over time, it’s grown into a cherished tradition — a moment to pause, celebrate, and say a heartfelt “thank you” to the brilliant men who help shape our children's lives.

The idea of Father’s Day originally began with a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, who wanted to honour her own father — a devoted single dad who raised six children. It was such a lovely sentiment that it gradually caught on in many countries, including right here in Britain, where we’ve made it our own with tea, toast, and plenty of handmade cards.

At Fun Box Day Nursery, we believe these special moments deserve to be celebrated in playful, joyful ways — so we decided to join in with Father's Day 2025 with a Stay and Play that was a memory-maker from start to finish!

Father's Day 2025 Stay and Play at Fun Box

🍕 Dough You Know How Much We Appreciate You?

The smell of melted cheese and tomato sauce filled the air as our families got creative with pizza-making! Using ready-made flatbreads, pizza sauce, cheese, and pepperoni, our little chefs teamed up with their dads (and grandads and uncles!) to craft delicious personal pizzas. It wasn’t just about the food — it was about the laughter, the messy fingers, and the proud smiles as children showed off their culinary creations.

🔍 Scavenger Hunt Shenanigans

With full tummies and happy hearts, it was time to head off on a scavenger hunt adventure! Together, children and their grown-ups explored the nursery, hunting for pictures of various objects hidden around the setting. There were squeals of delight and a fair bit of competitive spotting as families worked together to complete the challenge.

🤖 Build-a-Bot & Splash Patrol

Back in the creative zone, junk turned into genius at our robot-making station, where cardboard tubes, bottle tops, and recycled odds and ends became amazing robot creations — all made with teamwork and imagination.

Then came the firefighting finale! Colourful chalk “flames” were drawn onto the wall, and children raced to put them out using giant water syringes. It was energetic, a little bit soggy, and a lot of fun!

📚 Stories, Snuggles & Sweet Treats

To wind things down, we welcomed everyone into our cosy reading corner for storytime. There’s something truly special about seeing a child curled up with a loved one, sharing a book — the calm after the creative storm.

A father and his daughter sitting on colourful rug, smiling and reading a book in a cozy library setting. Bookshelves and vibrant decor in background.

And of course, there was cake. Because what celebration is complete without a slice (or two) of something sweet?

💙 Thank You for Making It Special

We want to give a big thank you to all the amazing men who joined us — the dads, grandads, uncles, carers and friends who showed up with smiles, sleeves rolled up, and hearts wide open.

You help shape the world our children grow up in, and it means so much to see you sharing these precious moments with them.

Happy Father’s Day from all of us at Fun Box Day Nursery — we’re already looking forward to next year’s adventure!
