At Fun Box Day Nursery, our 2–4-year-olds have continued their vibrant journey with Elmer the Elephant, building upon last week's colourful adventures. This week, we were exploring colours through various activities, both indoors and outdoors, aligning with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework.
🎨 Colourful Explorations
Our little artists delved deeper into the world of colours:
Elephant Footprint Painting: Using toy elephants dipped in paint, children created footprints, enhancing their understanding of cause and effect while developing fine motor skills.
Shaving Foam Colour Mixing: With pipettes in hand, our young scientists experimented with primary colours in shaving foam, observing how they blend to form new hues. This sensory activity not only sparked curiosity but also supported cognitive development and creativity.
Chalk Drawings in the Garden: Taking advantage of the sunny weather, children drew Elmer and his colourful patches on the pavement, reinforcing colour recognition and encouraging outdoor physical activity.
These activities support several developmental domains:
Cognitive Development: Recognizing and naming colours enhances memory and categorization skills, laying the groundwork for mathematical concepts like sorting and patterning.
Language Skills: Describing colours and their combinations enriches vocabulary and communication abilities, essential for effective interaction.
Emotional Expression: Colours can be associated with emotions, helping children to express feelings and develop emotional intelligence.
🌈 Parachute Play in the Garden
We took our colour exploration outdoors with vibrant parachute play. Children worked together to lift, wave, and run beneath the parachute, promoting teamwork and social interaction. The bright colours and rhythmic movements provided a rich sensory experience, supporting gross motor development and coordination. (slcn.com.au)
🌿 Sensory Jungle Tray
Indoors, we introduced a sensory jungle tray filled with real leaves, twigs, and animal figures. This tactile experience stimulated the senses and encouraged imaginative play. Children engaged in storytelling and role-play, enhancing language development and fine motor skills. (salusuhealth.com)
🌱 Gardening Adventures
Our garden has been a hub of activity as we tended to our sweet peas and beans. Children observed the growth of their plants, learning about life cycles and the importance of care and responsibility. Such gardening activities enhance fine motor skills and foster a sense of connection to the natural world.
📚 Storytime and Social Skills
Reading Elmer the Elephant together has been a joyful experience, promoting language development and social interaction. Discussing Elmer's uniqueness and the beauty of diversity has encouraged empathy and understanding among our young learners.

By weaving together storytelling, art, sensory play, and nature exploration, we've created a rich tapestry of learning experiences. These activities not only align with EYFS principles but also lay a strong foundation for our children's future educational journeys.
We look forward to continuing this colourful adventure with your little ones! 🌈🐘
